What You'll Need
Before you start, have these three things ready:
- A smartphone (iPhone or Android) with internet access.
- A valid passport โ mandatory for real-name verification in 2026.
- An international credit or debit card. As of 2026, Alipay supports Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover, and Diners Club International. American Express was officially added in February 2025, so Amex cardholders are now fully covered.
You do not need a Chinese phone number, a Chinese bank account, or any local ID. A physical credit or debit card from your home country is all it takes. Note that virtual cards and prepaid cards may be restricted in some payment scenarios โ use a standard physical card where possible.
Step-by-Step Setup
Complete these steps at home, at least 48 hours before you fly. A stable home connection makes the process much smoother โ airport Wi-Fi or a new roaming SIM can cause SMS verification delays at the worst possible moment.
-
Download the App and Register
Install the official Alipay app from the App Store or Google Play. Sign up using your international mobile number โ make sure it can receive SMS codes. You can switch the interface to English straight away.
-
Start Identity Verification
Go to the "Me" tab, find "Identity Verification" or "Real-Name Verification", and select Passport as your document type. This step is mandatory under Chinese regulations โ it's what unlocks full payment functionality and higher transaction limits.
-
Submit Your Passport Photo
Take a clear photo of your passport's photo page directly within the app. Use good lighting with no reflections or glare. A blurry or cropped image will be rejected and you'll need to repeat the step.
-
Complete Facial Recognition
After submitting your passport, the app asks you to complete a face scan. This confirms you are the passport holder. Follow the on-screen prompts โ it takes around 10 seconds in good light.
-
Add Your International Card
Once verified, go to "Bank Cards", tap "Add Card", and enter your Visa, Mastercard, Amex, or other supported card details. Alipay will run a small authorization to confirm the card is active.
-
You're Ready to Pay
Open Alipay, tap "Pay" to show your payment code, or tap "Scan" to scan a merchant's QR code. Either way, payment goes through in seconds. Do a small test transaction at home if possible โ a convenience store or online top-up โ just to confirm everything is working.
The single most common mistake foreign visitors make is trying to set up Alipay after landing. Airport Wi-Fi is unreliable. Switching SIMs disrupts SMS delivery. Jet lag makes troubleshooting miserable.
Do the full setup at home, ideally a week before departure. Once it's done, you won't need to touch it again. It works the moment you land.
Fees: What You'll Actually Pay
Alipay's fee structure for international cards is simple and worth knowing in advance:
- Under ยฅ200 per transaction (roughly US$28 / โฌ26 / A$43): completely free.
- ยฅ200 and above: Alipay charges a 3% transaction fee on the full amount.
For everyday spending โ meals, metro rides, coffee, convenience stores โ you will almost never hit ยฅ200 in a single transaction. The fee is most relevant for larger purchases like clothing, electronics, or hotel payments.
Practical tip: For a larger bill, ask the cashier to split the payment into amounts under ยฅ200 each. Many vendors in tourist areas are used to this. Alternatively, for big purchases, use the shop's card terminal directly โ no Alipay fee applies.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
๐ด Biggest mistake: Setting up Alipay after you land. Spotty airport Wi-Fi and roaming SMS delays cause verification to fail right when you need it most. Set it up at home.
Passport and name matching
Your passport must be valid for the duration of your trip. More importantly, the name on your Alipay account must exactly match the name on your passport and your bank card. Even a small discrepancy โ a middle name included on one but not the other โ can cause verification to fail.
Facial recognition issues
Do the face scan in a well-lit room with a plain background. Remove hats, glasses, or anything covering your face. If it fails twice, wait a few minutes before trying again โ the system sometimes needs a short cooldown.
Virtual or prepaid cards
Alipay generally requires a physical credit or debit card. Virtual card numbers and most prepaid cards are either blocked or limited. Use a standard card issued by your bank.
Set Up WeChat Pay Too
Alipay is accepted almost everywhere in China โ but WeChat Pay is equally common. The setup process is nearly identical: download WeChat, complete passport verification, add an international card. Most shops accept both, but occasionally a vendor will only have one option available.
Having both apps takes an extra 15 minutes at home and removes any risk of being caught without a working payment method. It is worth doing.
Once You're Set Up
With Alipay on your phone and your international card linked, you can pay for almost anything in China โ restaurants, metro tickets, taxis, convenience stores, markets, and hotel deposits โ without ever needing to exchange cash or find an ATM. It is the single most practical thing you can do before a China trip.
Keep ยฅ200โ300 in small notes as a backup for the rare cash-only vendor. But for the vast majority of your trip, your phone is all you need.
